The Burning Bridge

The Ranger’s Apprentice Series are a collection of very good books. The first book in this series is The Ruins of Gorlan. The Burning Bridge is the second book in the series. It is the sequel of The Ruins of Gorlan. This is a great beginning to the series. In this book Will, one of the main characters, becomes an apprentice to the Legendary renowned Ranger, Halt. The Rangers are the elite protectors of the fiefs, or something like a small kingdom/large town. Halt is the personal advisor of the King Duncan, who is the ruler of Araluen. Will trains with Halt, and becomes very good as a Ranger Apprentice.

In the ending, Will saves some very important people from the evil Kalkara. This series takes place in the kingdom of Araluen. I would recommend this book for readers who are ten years old and older. I would also recommend this book to people who like reading about medieval times and fiction. The main characters in this book are Halt, King Duncan, Baron Arald, Horace, Evanlyn, Ranger Gilan, and Morgarath. Morgarath is the evil man who is trying to capture the kingdom of Araluen for his own uses. He controls the Wargals, a species of weak minded savages that fear no enemy except cavalry or mounted troops. This book is about a war between Morgarath and King Duncan. Duncan’s army found a battle plan of Morgarath’s army that said how they would attack. The king sent Gilan, Horace, and Will to Celtica for extra troops against Morgarath. They trio got to Celtica, but their were no Celts (People of Celtica) in any of the villages. They met a person on their journey who said that they were all captured. Soon, Gilan decides to report back to the king, and leaves Will in charge of the group.

The new trio (Horace, Will, and Evanlyn) continue on their journey and find that the Wargals are forcing the captured Celts to build a bridge for them to march over to the other side of the gap and attack Araluen. Will and Horace and Evanlyn all decide that the best thing is to burn the bridge. They succeed in burning it, but both Will and Evanlyn get captured by some mercenaries hired by Morgarath. Morgarath’s army gets crushed after a surprise attack because of the new information about the bridge. Horace defeats Morgarath in single combat and then the war in over.

I think that my favorite character in this book was Horace, Will’s friend. I liked Horace because he was strong and brave, as well as very powerful with the sword. I also liked this character because he was very kind and caring for all his friends. In this book, Horace contributed to the team in many ways. First, when Gilan, Will, and Horace went on their mission to Celtica for extra troops in preparation of the war, Will and Horace were raided by two bandits. Will’s bow and knives were too far away. However, Horace’s sword was just in reach, so he got it. Luckily, Horace was very talented with the sword and skillfully defeated the two bandits. If he had not, the bandits would have stolen many of their supplies. Also, he was very helpful in the end of this war, since he defeated Morgarath and killed him. By doing this, he stopped the war and saved countless lives that could have died in finishing the war against the Wargals and the enemy.

I really liked the part when Horace defeated Morgarath because in this part of the book, it was portrayed very well and had a lot of details in it. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars!
